Andrew and Tristan Tate, the controversial former kickboxer duo and social‑media moguls, told a Miami magistrate on Thursday that they need to be released from jail in order to fight extradition to the UK, where 59 criminal charges – including rape and sex‑trafficking – hang over them.
Clad in tan jail uniforms, the brothers insisted they did not commit the alleged crimes and complained loudly about the small, hot cells that left them with limited sunlight or exercise. Andrew, 39, declared he had never committed the crimes he faced and Tristan, 38, described the conditions as “death by scurvy” after losing 14 lb.
US government lawyers said the men were a flight risk; they bragged about having multiple passports and the resources that could fund an escape. Defence counsel countered that the brothers’ public profiles and multiple media engagements made it extremely difficult for them to flee unnoticed.
The court will issue a written ruling later. The brothers were arrested in Miami on 19 July following the Crown Prosecution Service’s unveiling of new charges that summer. The UK must submit a full extradition request by 16 September.
During Thursday’s hearing, the defence lawyers asserted the brothers had complied with all court‑order conditions while handling other legal battles, such as a case in Romania that stemmed from 2022 sex‑trafficking accusations.
Tristan cautioned that extradition to the UK could strip him of everything he has built. The brothers also highlighted that the Romanian charges had “destroyed my entire life,” citing lost savings accounts used for their children’s college funds.
The Tates built an influencer empire in the manosphere, flaunting a lifestyle of wealth to a predominantly young male audience. The White House has stated President Donald Trump will not intervene in the extradition case.
