South African midfielder Jayden Adams, 25, has been confirmed dead after a police investigation uncovered his body in a house on Cape Town’s Schotschekloof suburb.
Adams played the full 90 minutes in all three group stage games for the national side at the 2026 World Cup, helping Bafana Bafana reach the round of 32 where they lost 1‑0 to host Canada.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed “profound shock and a heavy heart” at the news and called for restraint as the cause of death remains unconfirmed.
The South African Football Players Union said they were “devastated by the untimely passing” of the young talent, who had debuted for the national team in 2022.
President Gianni Infantino posted on social media, offering his thoughts, condolences and solidarity with Adams’ family, teammates and the football community worldwide.
With a career that began at Stellenbosch FC, moved to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, and saw league and African Champions League triumphs, Adams’ sudden death leaves both club and country in mourning.
