Sonya Massey murder: convicted officer Sean Grayson dies in prison
Sean Grayson, the former Illinois police officer convicted of shooting 36‑year‑old journalist Sonya Massey, has died in a state prison at age 32.
Grayson’s fatal shooting occurred after Massey called the police to report a suspected intruder at her Springfield, Illinois home on the night of the Independence Day weekend in 2024. A brief body‑cam clip shows the confrontation, including a heated exchange about a pot of boiling water – a point Grayson later argued prompted him to fire.
After a jury convicted him of second‑degree murder, Grayson received a 20‑year sentence. In late 2023, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and unsuccessfully sought early release on medical grounds.
His death in custody was confirmed by attorney Daniel Fultz, who omitted the cause. Massachusetts’ family's lawyers stated, “Grayson’s death does not bring sonya back.” They also expressed hope that his family receives prayers of peace as they grieve the loss.
The incident sparked nationwide protests, and President Joe Biden remarked that Sonya Massey “should be alive today.” The case remains a pivotal point in the debate over police accountability and racial justice in the United States.
