Pakistan Supreme Court orders Imran Khan to hospital from jail

Pakistan’s highest court has ordered that former Prime Minister Imran Khan be transferred to a hospital to receive medical care after concerns have been raised about his deteriorating health in prison.

In a decision by a three‑judge panel, the court directed that Khan be moved to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within the next 48 hours for examination by qualified physicians. The ruling also allows for weekly family visits and telephone contact with his children.

Khan, who has been jailed since 2023 on corruption and political‑motivation charges, has complained of several health issues, notably a severe decline in vision—his right eye retains only 15% sight, according to his lawyers. The Supreme Court cites the constitutional duty to safeguard a prisoner’s “life, health, dignity and security.”

The move comes amid wider protests by his supporters and the crackdown on opposition activists following his arrest. Despite being locked up, Khan remains a powerful voice in Pakistani politics, drawing a large constituency of loyal followers.

The Pakistani government has not issued a public statement on the court’s decision.
