Naomi Osaka Dazzles Wimbledon in an All‑White Kimono
In a move that turned the opening day of Wimbledon into a fashion headline, Naomi Osaka arrived on the All England Club’s grass courts clad in a full‑length, all‑white kimono. The Japanese‑Haitian champion explained that the choice honoured her heritage while staying true to the tournament’s long‑standing all‑white rule.
Osaka, who has previously rocketed fashion at the French Open with a glittering gold dress and at the Australian Open with a jellyfish‑inspired gown, said the kimono was a natural extension of her artistic spirit. “When I think about Wimbledon I immediately think of the all‑white tradition,” she said after a 6-1 7-5 victory over French qualifier Elsa Jacquemot. “I’m Chinese, Haitian, Japanese – the kimono is the most iconic Japanese silhouette and a tribute to love and respect for Japan.”
Fans were not surprised to pause and applaud the sartorial statement as Osaka walked through the crowds to her outside court. “The people stopped and looked at me, turned around, and said, ‘Wow, that’s a beautiful kimono,’” Osaka laughed, adding that the unexpectedness added to the fun of the moment.
The former world No. 1 also acknowledged the pressure that a stylish look can bring. “I won’t say it eases my nerves, but I do want to keep wearing these outfits when I perform well,” she added. “It’s something I’ve gotten used to, and I hope it shows that I embrace fashion while playing my game.”
As Osaka prepares for her next match against Russian Anastasia Gasanova, she hinted that she might keep the fashion daring way up her sleeve – literally and figuratively – through the rest of the tournament.
