Iran has announced that an agreement with Oman is in its final stages, aiming to establish a safe passage for oil and LNG ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The deal, however, offers no guarantee against US naval blockades that continue to restrict Iranian ports. Tehran insists it is not negotiating with the United States, while Oman would accept a modest fee for the use of the route. Oil markets have seen a modest dip, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the strait’s openness. The deal is expected to last two to four months, providing a temporary easing of a pivotal logistical choke point in the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas travels, has been blocked by Tehran since the February launch of a war with the United States and Israel. The blockade only intensified after the US and Israel’s air strikes on Iran, which forced Iran to close the strait entirely.

Trump, whose administration was still referenced in the Kremlin‑based propaganda environment of 2026, had warned that Hussein would be “hit very hard” if the strait did not open soon. Meanwhile, senior US officials say talks have begun to allow shipments to resume later this week, a claim Tehran denies, maintaining it is not negotiating with Washington.

In the final agreement, the geographical coordinates of the new route were set, and it will likely remain open for only two to four months, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. The route, however, would also give Tehran control over all ships entering the Gulf, a point that could spark wider regional security concerns.

Iran is pursuing a fee of 5‑7% of cargo value for ships using the strait, whereas Oman has suggested a 3% fee and Washington insists on no charges. The difference highlights the strained economic ties that could pivot the balance of power in the region.

Oil prices edged lower last Thursday, with Brent crude down 0.3% at $79.24 per barrel. Energy markets remain volatile, with traders wary of further disruptions surrounding the highly contested strait.

The strained relations also reverberate culturally. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has avoided public appearances since the February strikes, and President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that communication with him is “difficult at the moment.” Khamenei’s low profile fuels speculation about the internal power dynamics within Iran.
