In brief

Families in Idaho are suing state and federal agencies, alleging mistreatment and illegal tactics during a massive immigration raid. Detained individuals were subjected to racial profiling, physical restraints, and inhumane conditions, raising concerns about the violation of their civil rights. The plaintiffs seek class action status for all affected citizens and lawful residents and demand accountability and damages from law enforcement.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Three Idaho families who are U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents have initiated a lawsuit claiming mistreatment and illegal tactics employed during an aggressive immigration raid at a horse racing track last year. The incident involved hundreds of individuals being detained for hours.

The families assert that state and federal law enforcement agencies collaborated to use unconstitutional methods during the raid, which disproportionately targeted individuals appearing Latino. They report being restrained with zip ties for extended periods, and being denied basic amenities such as food, water, and access to restrooms.

Similar tactics have emerged in other states where U.S. citizens and legal residents have been swept up in immigration enforcement actions, raising serious concerns regarding racial profiling and civil rights violations.

On October 19, state and federal law enforcement officials descended upon La Catedral, a racetrack about an hour west of Boise, during a raid primarily aimed at investigating illegal gambling operations. However, out of approximately 400 individuals detained, only five arrests were related to the gambling allegations, while over 100 others were suspected of immigration violations.

The lawsuit highlights that the FBI possessed a criminal search warrant for gambling but allegedly used it as a pretext to search for undocumented immigrants in what is described as a ‘fishing expedition.’ The ACLU of Idaho, representing the families, argues that such actions are emblematic of a broader trend of racialized policing.

The raid turned into a chaotic scene as law enforcement officers, armed and in militarized gear, confronted families enjoying a community event. Reports indicate that they utilized aggressive tactics, including breaking car windows to intimidate those inside, while families with children were subjected to traumatic experiences, including being thrown to the ground and shot at with rubber bullets.

The families are not only seeking to address their experiences but aim to hold the involved agencies accountable, asserting a collective legal responsibility for the distress and injury caused. They are pursuing class-action status for their claims and compensation for damages, claiming their constitutional rights were violated. This litigation underscores serious implications for immigration policy and enforcement practices in the United States.
