In brief

A landslide disaster in Bulambuli district has led to significant loss of life and property due to relentless rainfall, prompting military assistance in rescue efforts.

At least 13 lives have been claimed by a devastating landslide that struck eastern Uganda amidst heavy rainfall, igniting fears that the actual number of fatalities may be significantly higher. Approximately 40 homes were swept away in the Bulambuli district, situated about 280 kilometers (178 miles) from Kampala, the capital. The Ugandan Red Cross Society announced the fatalities, while agencies such as AFP suggested the toll could escalate to as many as 30 individuals. Ongoing rescue operations have been launched in the area, with a distressing number of the deceased reported to be children, as per local outlet Daily Monitor.Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja issued a disaster alert via social media, warning of missing individuals presumed buried under the debris. "People are suspected to be missing, and some feared buried by slides," he articulated in his statement. The catastrophic weather events have caused rivers to overflow, leading to widespread flooding across schools, churches, and infrastructure, which has cut off entire communities. In response to the situation, the Ugandan military has been mobilized to aid search and recovery initiatives. On Wednesday, military forces detailed their support efforts, including the deployment of two boats for the retrieval of a taxi stranded on a submerged bridge. Unfortunately, one of the boats capsized, resulting in the loss of an engineer's life.Within parliament, Speaker Anitah Among extended condolences to the grieving families impacted by the raging floods that have afflicted the nation. As Uganda grapples with the consequences of this tragic event, the community's resilience is being tested as they navigate through these trying times.
