Prosecutors in Los Angeles will file murder charges against Nick Reiner, the son of Rob and Michele Reiner, who were tragically found dead in their home with multiple stab wounds on Sunday.
Nick Reiner, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. He will appear in court to face the charges once he has been declared 'medically cleared' by officials, according to District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
The DA announced that no decision has yet been made on whether to pursue the death penalty. Rob Reiner is well-known for directing iconic films such as This is Spinal Tap, Misery, and A Few Good Men.
Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer, and production company founder, known for her work with Reiner Light.
According to Hochman, Nick Reiner is being charged with a 'special circumstance of multiple murders,' which could result in an enhanced penalty if convicted. He is also accused of using a dangerous weapon, specifically a knife, during the crime.
The suspect remains in medical testing to ensure he can attend court and is expected to face a judge for arraignment, where he will enter a plea. LA Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell noted that this case has deeply affected the community. 'This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal for the Reiner family and their loved ones, and for the entire city,' he said.
Further, it remains uncertain if mental illness may have played a role in the crime. The District Attorney indicated that any evidence regarding mental health would be presented in court by the defense.
