Egypt detains suspects behind fake judge scam
Several people have been arrested in Egypt after an alleged plot by impersonators to defraud citizens of their money.
The Ministry of Interior said the scam involved fabricated court scenes and people posing as judges on social media.
The main suspects, an unemployed man in Cairo and a student in Giza, were detained. They confessed to forming a criminal gang that took money by falsely claiming they could secure housing through government agencies.
They also admitted staging fake court footage with the help of others.
State‑owned newspaper al‑Ahram reported that several suspects were detained and referred for an expedited criminal trial. The plot surfaced when a citizen reported being scammed by a man presenting himself as a judge.
Police seized a firearm, a judicial sash and identity cards bearing a fake judicial title. The suspects admitted filming inside a courthouse while wearing the sash to boost credibility.
Court employees were also detained and questioned. They claimed the main suspect had informed them he worked for a judicial authority.
