In brief
Authorities are on the hunt for Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, 45, who is wanted for first-degree murder after a 911 call falsely claimed he was chased by a bear, only to discover a body nearby that was disguised under a stolen identity.
In a stunning turn of events on October 18, a man in rural Tennessee dialed 911 claiming he was injured after a bear chased him off a cliff and into a river. However, upon the arrival of emergency responders, an entirely different scene unfolded. Not far from a bridge on the picturesque Cherohala Skyway, the Monroe County Sheriff's office discovered a deceased man, initially identified as Brandon Kristopher Andrade, the name the 911 caller had provided.Yet, authorities quickly revealed that the identification was fraudulent and that the real identity belonged to the missing Brandon Kristopher Andrade, while the person behind the false claim was actually Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, a 45-year-old parolee with a checkered past, including convictions for assault, forgery, and theft. Following the shocking revelations, Sheriff Tommy J. Jones II announced that a warrant had been issued for Hamlett’s arrest on a first-degree murder charge. He is considered “armed and dangerous” and is believed to have fled the state. As investigators begin to unearth the details surrounding the unidentified victim and the mysterious circumstances of his death, authorities have yet to release a sketch of the deceased to assist with identification. In what appears to be an eerie pattern, this case echoes another incident earlier this month near Bozeman, Montana, where a reported bear attack turned out to be a homicide, with the victim suffering severe injuries that pointed more towards foul play than animal aggression. As local law enforcement continues the search for Hamlett, they are working diligently to uncover the truth surrounding the lost life and bring justice to those affected by this harrowing event. As of now, the identity of the victim remains under wraps while authorities remain tight-lipped about the details of the murder.
