In brief

During a fundraiser in Hanover, Maryland, President Joe Biden took a sharp swipe at former President Donald Trump, calling him a "loser" and denouncing the former's so‑called "vanity projects" such as a new White House ballroom, a revamped Reflecting Pool, and a foisted name on the Kennedy Center. Biden also urged taxpayers to stop funding the January 6 supporters and slammed Trump for continuing to claim airport sabotage by "vandalism." Trump has so far declined to reply, but the President of the run‑off platform on Truth Social has mocked Biden as a "crooked politician" in other posts. The comments come as Biden prepares for the 2024 campaign, following a tough debate performance that once saw his rival Kamala Harris in the race.

At a Democratic Party fundraiser in Hanover, Maryland, President Joe Biden launched a barrage of personal attacks against former President Donald Trump, labeling him a "loser" for pursuing what Biden deemed vanity projects inside Washington, D.C.

He slammed Trump’s plans to tear down part of the White House East Wing and replace it with a ballroom, calling it an indulgence to serve “state guests while ignoring national security.” Biden also criticized the Trump White House’s drubbing of the Kennedy Center name, noting a court order that forced the removal of Trump’s name from the building’s front.

Trump has spent $400 million to create the ballroom and $14.7 million on re‑colouring and restoring the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a move that sparked public wariness and subsequent algae issues. Biden urged taxpayers to stop funding the January 6 supporters, saying it is a cost to public money without merit, and accused Trump of offering compensation to alleged victim‑blamed conspirators.

Responses from President Trump have been limited; he has dismissed Biden as a “crooked politician” on Truth Social and applied the nickname “sleepy Joe” in unrelated posts, yet has not formally replied to these latest criticisms.

The remarks arrived two years after a disastrous debate performance against Trump that prompted senior Democrats to call for Biden’s withdrawal, a line that ultimately saw Vice‑President Kamala Harris step in as the GOP nominee, only to lose to Trump in the 2024 election.
