At 10 p.m. local time on Saturday, a white van crashed into a crowded Berlin Pride event near the Brandenburg Gate, killing one woman and wounding at least 29 others. Police identified the 21‑year‑old suspect, Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent with alleged Islamist links, who was shot dead in a subsequent operation. European leaders condemned the attack, underscoring the incident’s impact on freedom and equality. The incident prompted a swift police response that involved thousands of officers and a city‑wide search.

What Happened

At about 10:00 p.m. GMT (22:00 local), a white van drove directly into a crowd at Tiergarten Park, near the iconic Brandenburg Gate, during Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event.

Hundreds of thousands were gathered for music, floats and speeches. The vehicle crashed into a tree and caused a scene of panic, with several people sustaining serious injuries and one woman tragically losing her life.

The event was abruptly cancelled. Organisers called for an evacuation; the word "evacuation" flashed on a large screen while emergency services rushed to the scene. Video footage shows the frantic crowd fleeing, emergency lights flashing, and police racing to assist.

Suspect

Abdul Ballout (21) was identified by police as the driver. He is a German citizen of Lebanese background, previously known to authorities as radicalised and linked to Islamist extremism.

May 2025: travelled from Turkey to Lebanon to join the Islamic State in Syria; was arrested in July 2025 and sentenced to three months for incitement to religious conflict.

November 2025: returned to Germany, was arrested at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, held in pre‑trial detention.

May 2026: sentenced to 1 year, 10 months for “preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state” and released under supervision.

September 2026: at 3:30 a.m. police identified him as an Islamist for the pride attack; he was later shot dead at a Spandau allotment complex after attacking officers with a knife.

Response and Condemnation

European leaders reacted swiftly. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed sympathy, calling Pride a symbol of “freedom, dignity, and equality.”

Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the tragedy and pledged support to Germany.

The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the incident as a "heinous" attack, underscoring the threat to the city’s safety and inclusivity.
