In brief

As torrential rains sweep across Spain, rescue workers race against time to locate missing individuals, with the death toll rising alarmingly in the aftermath of the devastating floods.

As Spain grapples with the aftermath of catastrophic flooding, heavy rains continue to batter the southern regions, significantly hampering search and rescue operations. Following one of the country's deadliest natural disasters in recent history, meteorologists are warning of further inclement weather. Recent downpours have particularly affected the province of Huelva in Andalusia, where residents celebrating Halloween were caught off guard by sudden deluges. As rainfall persists, the national meteorological agency has placed the area under a severe weather alert, urging citizens to remain indoors and rethink traditional celebrations for All Saints Day. Spokesman Rubén del Campo cautioned that conditions are likely to worsen throughout the weekend, especially in southwestern Spain.Meanwhile, in the east, rescue crews sift through debris in search of the dozens still unaccounted for. Reports indicate that as many as 158 lives have been lost, primarily in Valencia, with families locked in distress as they await news of loved ones, including business executives and vulnerable individuals in care facilities. In addition to flooding in residential areas, vehicles have been overturned or entirely submerged in water, complicating rescue efforts further. The situation remains dire as the nation comes to grips with the devastating impact of the floods, with continuous rainfall threatening to exacerbate an already critical humanitarian crisis.
